Academic Affairs; Matt Tracy, Director of General Education; and the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) would like to invite you to join a reading circle during the Spring 2024 semester to explore the value and transformative potential of the liberal arts and how this might inform the structure of a new general education curriculum at UNO. Reading circles are small self-regulated groups of faculty and staff who meet to discuss a common book and will be considered a Community of Practice by CFE. Communities of Practice participants receive $100 in professional development funds.
Potential book options for the spring reading circle include:
Not for Profit
(2010, Martha Nussbaum)
Why Choose the Liberal Arts
(2010, Mark Roche)
You Can Do Anything
(2019, George Anders)
Beyond the University
(2015, Michael Roth)
In Defense of Liberal Education
(2015, Fareed Zakaria)
Books will either be provided to participants or accessed online through the library. If interested, please complete this short survey with your contact information. You can rank-order your preference of the books above or suggest alternatives. Matt Tracy and CFE will follow-up with those who have completed the survey with additional information. Interested participants will be invited to meet 3-4 times throughout the spring semester to discuss a book in more detail.
