The UNO Physics Department is seeking Learning Assistant Fellows (LAFs) for the Fall 2023 academic semester. Physics LAFs will gain valuable experience in physics education, experiment design and development, teamwork, and leadership. Research has shown that participating as a LAF in physics courses leads to learning gains in physics, increased probability of retention in the major, improvements in other academic areas, and the development of abilities deemed valuable by graduate schools and employers.
As a LAF you will work with a faculty member in an introductory physics laboratory helping other students while improving your own skills. You will receive weekly training on introductory physics labs, assist introductory physics students during the lab period on completion of the lab, and reflect on the labs and suggest improvements to the labs from a knowledgeable student's perspective. Physics LAFs will also participate in common cohort learning experiences with other LAFs working in other lab sections.
LAFs will be expected to attend the assigned lab time each week, a weekly training, and participate in weekly learning activities with other LAFs on Canvas. The expected time commitment per week is between 4-6 hours, and only during weeks with active lab sessions (~12 weeks during the semester). LAFs will receive a $1,000 stipend for each assigned lab and may apply for more than one lab section. To be eligible for the fellowship you must be a current UNO student during your fellowship semester and have completed PHYS 2120 and PHYS 1164. Preference will be given to declared physics majors, though students from other majors may apply.
To apply, please complete the following application by May 19th, 2023. Notification of fellowships will be made on a rolling basis starting in June, so please do not delay applying if you are interested in a fellowship.
